Stefano Pioli’s side had all the answers in fending off their French foes in Milan last week and took a powerful grip on the playoff tie to celebrate a third win in a row.
The Rossoneri also managed to halt Rennes’ run of eight straight victories in the process, though that’s where Milan’s good fortune ended as it went on to lose 4-2 at Monza over the weekend.
And Pioli was left kicking himself as Milan came back from two goals down to draw level in the 88th minute of the local derby, only to concede twice more in the dying minutes.
The result hurt all the more considering loanee Daniel Maldini - the son of Milan legend Paolo - came off the Monza bench to set up the decisive fifth goal against his parent club.
A draw would suffice for Milan in the second leg - even defeat by two goals would still see them advance - but Pioli won’t like the idea of resting on his side’s three-goal buffer at Roazhon Park.
Neither team has any new injury worries ahead of the second leg, though Milan is dealing with the more significant absences, mainly that concerning England defender Fikayo Tomori.
